She said she did not know if she would be able to still do this as her vision was not as good as it had been, but with staff assistance and her wanting to give it a try it turned out very pretty. She was very happy when the wreath was completed and she was able to hang the wreath on her door for all to see.

Dare to Dream

Leona
Leona wanted to work on making something to hang on her door or in her room, so a wreath was chosen to be made for her apartment door. Leona picked the month of March to try this and wanted to do a St. Patrick’s themed wreath.Leona tied on pipe cleaners, with staff assistance, and pieces of different shades of green were placed on the wreath and other pieces were glued on at the end, such as pieces of gold and flowers, which were green and white in color. Leona decided on the pattern to be used, such as light to dark greens. Leona worked on her cutting and her tying during the making of the St. Patrick’s Day wreath.

Gerald
Gerald was working in the garden helping with the tomatoes one morning and we were talking about all sorts of things. One of them being what he liked doing with his family. He said lots of things: eating, fishing, playing games, and just seeing the kids. I asked him how many grandchildren he has and he said a few (eight total, I was later told by his wife) and then I asked him how long he and his wife had been married. He wasn’t sure but wanted to get her a gift. He did know that he should do something special for her. I asked him what else he might want to do with his wife to make her day and he said he would like to take her out to eat a meal.
Gerald and I spoke more on the matter about his wife’s favorite colors and foods. He said he was always proud of her taking care of the house. He wanted to make her a card. He wanted to get her a surprise, too, as it had just been their 59th wedding anniversary the week before. Together, we made a card. Then I took him to Hy-Vee to pick out flowers. Gerald asked me if he would ever be able to eat a meal with Peg. This was arranged for, along with another couple, for a couples' outing. When His wife arrived, he gave her the card and flowers. We then headed to Halbur, Iowa, to eat at the Full Nelson.

Karen
Karen has been an avid golfer for many years. She moved to Sunnybrook Assisted Living, in Carroll, in 2019. While getting to know Karen over the last few months, she expressed that she used to golf in Jefferson and that she at one point could have lived at the golf course as she was there “morning, noon, and night,” and then she laughed and told me maybe not that much but it was quite a bit. She said she has her own golf clubs and enjoyed golfing with her lady friends. Karen expressed to me that she enjoys music entertainment, piano music, and golfing. She is not into crafts or bingo, but put her on the golf course and it is like home to her. She is happy there.
I contacted Full Swing Golf, an indoor golf course and lounge. The owner of Full Swing Golf answered my email with this as a response: “I think this is a great idea. Our typical costs are $40 for one hour of simulator use. That is for the hour not the person. Typically, two people can play nine holes in one hour, but it may be challenging for some to finish nine holes that quickly. We would be willing to do a half-priced discount of $20 per hour per simulator if it was not during our busy hours.”
I reached back out to them and asked them if we could do a Dare to Dream and then it was scheduled. All I had to do now was tell Karen the news for this outing. Karen was very excited when I told her that there was a business downtown that would let her practice golfing, putting, or driving during the actual winter season. Karen asked me if they would also let her golf a game and I told her that they would let her do a game.
